Pilates is a body conditioning routine that may help build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back.

Your focus starts from the center, or "core", then progresses outward, lengthening and decompressing all vertebrae and joints.

I came to Pilates from an extensive dance background in NYC about thirty years ago. Over the years I had many opportunities to witness and experience the incredible restorative and re-aligning powers of this work.

Even though there is a great joy and artistic satisfaction to be had in seeing a body lengthen, even out, and re-shape as you sculpt it, Joanie also has a special gift for working with people who have physical challenges. She has had much success with clients suffering from herniated disk, spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, Ehler's-Danlos syndrome, hip, knee, and ankle replacement surgeries , C sections, scoliosis and much more!

My respect and understanding of this method deepens and increases every day with each new body.

Joseph Pilates quote: “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”

This class focuses on proper alignment, length and strength of your core, and moving from the inside out. Pilates will leave you feeling energized and buoyant - many perceived "problems" are simply a matter of poor alignment and misplaced tension. Diminished pain and increase of energy are often experienced, as well as a longer, leaner, firmer, and taller silhouette. In the time honored words of Joseph Pilates -"After ten times you feel the difference, after twenty times you will see the difference, and after thirty times you will have a new body."

Your focus starts from the center, or "core", then progresses outward, lengthening and decompressing all vertebrae and joints.

Pilates will strengthen your core, correct your alignment, give you buoyancy and well being, better sex life, and increase flexibility and balance. More ergonomic movements from center, increase energy level.

Pilates encourages you to move from the muscles closest to the bones, creating the long and lean bodies that are healthy, efficient, and "attractive"! The toning and stretching together with releasing tension from the large muscles of the shoulders, lower back and hip flexors leads to ergonomic movement and better sense of well being.

We will systematically activate all layers of abdominals - the abdominals rectus (six pack, or eight pack, muscles), internal and external oblique's (for a better waistline), and the lower, transverse abdominals (for flatter bellies, and better support of the lower back, central nervous system, and internal organs).

Joanie's approach is slow and gentle, breaking down each movement in order to fully understand the purpose and correct execution of each specific Pilates exercise.
